2026 CTEC Renewal Registration Deadlines
The 2026 "soft deadline" for returning CTEC preparers is going to be October, 31st, 2025. The cost of renewal is $33 dollars if completed by the soft deadline.
CTEC renewal November 1st-January 15th will be $33 plus an additional $55 late fee. This is the hard deadline for returning CTEC preparers who have completed the 20-Hour CTEC Continuing Education Course.
Failure to renew your CTEC registration for 2026 by January 15th, 2026 will result in the CTEC preparer being required to complete the entire 60-Hour CTEC Qualifying Education Course as a new preparer in order to get registered for the new 2026 tax filing season.

Tax education courses that are made for the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) are sometimes thought to be very challenging, more so than courses made for federal continuing education. CTEC is likely difficult because it deals with tax regulations and aims to ensure competency among tax preparers.
- Stricter Standards: CTEC holds its approved continuing education providers to a high standard because it wants to see the training create competent California tax preparers who were trained well to understand CA tax law.
- Keeping Up-to-Date: Tax laws and regulations can change every year. Staying up-to-date on tax law changes will help ensure that accurate tax returns are filed by the tax preparer, no matter the year.
- Focus on Proficiency: The idea behind tax preparer education competency requirements is to make sure tax preparers are truly proficient in their field. Being able to pass the test is great, but being proficient in your field will make your life easier and your business more lucrative!
